Loveland - North Central Colorado
From its origins as a small cluster of farms along the Big Thompson River, LOVELAND has grown into one of Colorado's most exciting cities, offering plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities, rich historic sites along with dining, shopping and evening entertainment activities.
Known as Colorado's "Sweetheart City," LOVELAND is named after William Austin Hamilton Loveland, a prominent early Coloradoan and the president of the Colorado Central Railroad. In 1877, Mr. Loveland decided to route an expansion of his railroad through the farms clustered along the Big Thompson, prompting the area's excited residents to name the resultant town after him. LOVELAND grew from there, thanks to its agricultural strength, which later brought a Great Western sugar plant to town.
Today, the city has so much more to offer than good farming. Outdoor enthusiasts love Loveland's proximity to great fishing, rock climbing, hiking and biking trails. Popular nearby spots include Carter Lake, Boyd Lake State Park and Horsetooth Mountain Park and Reservoir. And Rocky Mountain National Park is just a few miles away, accessible via a scenic drive through the breathtaking Big Thompson Canyon. The canyon, carved by the mighty Big Thompson River, offers scenic views, plenty of wildlife to watch - including big horn sheep and elk - and many stop-offs for activities like hiking and fishing. For those looking to shop the 38-store factory outlet mall is just west of the junction of Highway 34 and I-25. Those looking for even more scenic driving can travel the Cache La Poudre Scenic Byway, which wanders through the mountains and forests of northern Colorado. Passing through Roosevelt National Forest, drivers can stop for picnicking, hiking, wildlife watching and fishing opportunities just about anywhere along the 101-mile route. Closer to town, visitors to LOVELAND can visit the city's well-preserved historic downtown, which includes the beautiful Rialto Theater Performing Arts Center and the city's history museum. Be sure to stroll through town and check out LOVELAND'S multi-million dollar collection of bronze sculptures. Loveland is Near: Estes Park, Fort Collins, Greeley & Longmont.
